The producer
Malaki Estate was established in 1959 by Edward Marigi and is now managed by his wife, Florence Mukuhi Marigi, and their daughter Jessica. The estate is in Githunguri, Kiambu County, on the western slopes of the Aberdare Range, in red volcanic soil at over 1,900 metres. It is one of the few remaining farms growing only traditional Kenyan varieties, here SL28 and SL34.
The process
Washed. The estate has two harvests a year, selects its cherries carefully, and uses a processing method that hasn’t changed in decades. In a washed process, the fruit is removed from the bean before the coffee is dried.
